Five Teachers Honored at Fall Atelier
August 8, 2024Master Colorists Collaborate at ICA’s Fall Atelier
September 5, 2024At Intercoiffure America Canada’s Fall Atelier September 29-30, a talented group of women will take the stage as ICA’s first-ever all-female cutting presenters.
Even though the salon industry is made up of more than 80 percent women, cutting has been a male-dominated area as women often choose to specialize in color.
“But it’s time to showcase the female cutters,” says Sheila Wilson, ICA president.
“Women are so adaptable and creative when it comes to cutting,” she adds. “We chose our team of cutters based on their different methods and how they can collaborate on stage together.”
A Powerful Lineup
The Cutting Connection team is made up of four talented women: Angie Bullman, creative director at Salon de la Vie, Kindsay Elgin, owner of Essence Salon, Inge Handing, president/educational director of Salon Ingá, and Lisa Houser, owner of Utopia Salon, who will serve as the team’s emcee.
Each of these women has extensive cutting training and will bring her unique style to the stage at Atelier.
“Showcasing women haircutters is important as it highlights their significant contributions to the hairstyling industry,” says Houser. “Women stylists bring creativity, skill, and innovation to cutting techniques, shaping current trends, and setting new ones—mostly because we can relate emotionally, mentally, and physically to the effects of looking good and feeling great.”
And this team of cutters will demonstrate all of those qualities and more.
Bullman says, “We all have different approaches to haircutting, which is great. Personally, I have curated a technique that’s unique to me and provides a strong foundation for young stylists that’s logical and easy to follow.”
Like Bullman, Handing is also an educator and teaches Classic Cutting Foundation from Toni & Guy.
“There are always going to be amazing color trends, but if you can’t find the cut to complement that beautiful color—what’s it all for?” she says. “The client looks to us to maintain the harmony and cohesiveness between their cut and color. Even if it’s natural color, we need to continue to offer them ways to highlight their features best.”
