Celebrating Scissors, Razors and Other Sharp Tools

Frank Gambuzza

Or rather, let us celebrate what is created by these tools, the fundamental art of the salon professional—the cut. The art of the cut is the raison d’etre behind the founding of Intercoiffure’s Haircutting Council in 2010 by creative directors Frank Gambuzza and Anthony Muti.

“90 percent of Intercoiffure salons are departmentalized,” notes Frank Gambuzza, of Salon Visage in Memphis, “which is why advanced haircutting education is needed. The Council demonstrates advanced creative cutting techniques and teaches retailing skills and overall best business practices. Business plus art equals a true expert!”

Every year, six leading platform artists/educators are invited to create a collection for the Haircutting Council. The collection is introduced at the Fall Atelier. The Council then teaches a hands-on workshop at the following Spring Symposium. This advanced technical education is supplemented by a discussion of best business and retailing practices, led by Gambuzza and Muti.

“Take 3,” the Council’s premiere collection, was introduced October 17, 2010 in New York by Stacie Bowie, John Gialluisi, Woody Michleb, Micki Stirsman, Judy Tuttle-Wurth and Andreas Zafiriadis, with co-directors Frank Gambuzza and Anthony Muti.

“Haircutting services account for half of the service revenue in an Intercoiffure salon, at least in terms of SKUs,” says Anthony Muti of Mario Tricoci Salons in Illinois. “A stylist must not only know how to deliver an extraordinary cut, but also how to effectively recommend styling products and tools to the client. This is part of what we teach through the Council.”
